Start of the Greek presidency of the European Union

On 1 January 2014, Greece took over the Presidency of the European Union in the first half of the year, before handing over reins to Italy on 1 July 2014. It is the fifth time that Greece will hold the EU Presidency since its accession to the EU in 1981.

Main objectives
The programme is based on four main fields of action,

  • Growth, Jobs and cohesion
  • Further Integration of the EU Euro-zone
  • Migration, borders, mobility


Beside these main objectives, Sea policies as a thematic that will run horizontally through all Presidency priorities.


Other animal welfare related issues are not known so far.
