Research to find out if the hens have enough bushes and trees to feel save outside the stable. Seven global food firms have joined forces to create the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW). Nestlé, Unilever, Ikea Food Services, Aramark, Compass Group, Elior Group, and Sodexois  form one of the world’s first global food industry-led groups focused on accelerating the development of animal welfare standards.

The coalition will implement 3 strategies: provide a platform where food companies and farm animal welfare experts can work closely; prioritize welfare issues and develop roadmaps for industry change; and advance knowledge through industry insights, research, and partnerships for action.

24.05.2017 – OIE, Adoption of the first global strategy for animal welfare

On May 24, 2017, 180 members of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) adopted the first global strategy for animal welfare. It was endorsed at the Fourth World Conference on Animal Welfare in Guadalajara, Mexico, in December 2016 and aims to achieve "A world where animal welfare is respected, promoted and strengthened, a growing improvement in animal health, human well-being, socio-economic development and environmental sustainability ".1

The strategy is based on the following four pillars:

  1. Development of international animal welfare standards
  2. Enhancement of capacity building and training of Veterinary Services
  3. Communication with governments, national and international organisations, and the public to raise awareness on animal welfare
  4. Progressive implementation of OIE standards on animal welfare and their corresponding policies
